Today we launch the third of our series of Autumn weekenders: Rhyme & Rhythm
Screenings will take place Friday 30 October - Sunday 1 November at Showroom Cinema, Sheffield, while most titles can also be seen in parallel on Doc/Player, for Digital Industry Passholders, and on Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects, for UK public, until Thursday 12 November.
Rhyme & Rhythm
Film has a rich tradition of incorporating and interacting with other practices and it is within this Rhyme & Rhythm strand where cinema and other art forms meet. Through performance – traditional and contemporary dance, and theatre; photography; and music – classical, electronic, gypsy folk, and post-punk.
Each film offers one artistic expression within another and spotlights the work of each artist:
Art is also a form of resistance and the majority of the artists featured use their craft to imagine and demand a better world: In Bring Down the Walls, the dance floor becomes a space of liberation for the Black, Latinx and queer community, and in Gracefully, a drag queen continues to dance in defiance of the ban in Iran.
In Schlingensief – A Voice That Shook the Silence, an incredible assembly of archive captures the legacy of the prolific theatre and filmmaker. In Sisters with Transistors, archive is used to tell the remarkable story of electronic music's unsung heroines.
Finally, Faith and Branko reminds us that despite language and cultural barriers, it is possible to fall in love not just with music but through music. A timely reminder that in a climate not only of social distancing, but mass isolation, insularity and segregation, art and culture crosses borders and brings us together.
From the UK and Serbia, across Europe, to Argentina and Iran, a diverse range of creative talent both in front of and behind the camera will rock and shine in this year’s Rhyme & Rhythm selection, offering encounters and inspirations to a different beat.
